Ishinosuke Uwano, missing for over 60 years, has finally been reunited with his family in Japan. Serving on Sakhalin during World War II, he was captured by Soviet forces at the end of the war and last reported seen in 1958. He and his family live in Zhitomir, west of Kyiv.

The government believes about 400 former Japanese Second World War soldiers are living in the states of the former Soviet Union, including 40 who have been identified.
